In 1923, when the population of Chilliwack numbered about 3,000, Rev. V.L. Meyer began work here. Traveling from Vancouver, he brought the Word of God to a little group of Lutherans ... just four people to start. By the end of the year, the number had grown to 20 people and services were conducted in the member's homes. In 1930, Candidate A.H. Haake took over the work in the valley. In addition to Chilliwack, Rev. Haake served Lulu Island, New Westminister, Crescent, Cloverdale, South Sumas, Bradner and Hope. Living in New Westminster, he became the founder of Mt. Calvary Church in that city.
We believe in God's deliberate plan for us
He sent His own Son to take upon himself the grim penalty of all our failings and shortcomings, including those we are not even aware of. We have received God's gracious gift and out of thankfulness we bless others, on purpose, as God has blessed us.
Worship in person or online at 10:00 am Sundays The Sacrament of Holy Communion is celebrated at each Sunday worship service God gathers us together in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, the name into which we were baptized. He gathers us to receive His gifts—Himself, His name, His flesh and blood Son, His Word of pardon and peace, His life, His grace and Spirit. In the Divine Service He distributes these gifts to us. Here we receive the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation Christ won for us on the cross. God calls and gathers us into His holy Christian church where we have communion with Him and all His saints in heaven and on earth. Heaven and earth intersect in the Divine Service. Christian Education isn't only for children. God's family of all ages can benefit from regular instruction in the Word of God. Come and join with others in this journey of faith through the Bible. New participants are always welcome at any of our education programs and you need not be a member of our congregation.
CHILDREN'S EDUCATION
During the school year (September-June) children are dismissed just prior to the sermon for Children's Church with an age-appropriate Bible lesson while their parents listen to Pastor's message. The children return to their families in time for communion. We also have Busy Bags with quiet toys for the young children as well as a Parents' Room with one way glass if parents need a quiet place to take their little ones. During the summer months, children worship in church with their families, but we have an extended Children's Message along with crafts and story pages for the children to enjoy during the sermon time.
We respond to God's Blessings with acts of kindness to bless others
Seeking Ways to Bless our Neighbors
We want to praise God His many blessings by seeking out opportunities to bless others in His name. We partner with local relief agencies such as the Chilliwack Community Cupboard and Cyrus Center youth shelter and outreach program. We are currently collecting non-perishable food, good used clothes and even school supplies and toys for the Chilliwack Community Cupboard, a grassroots organization which supports needy families with children in the Chilliwack area. WE'RE ALL YOUNG AT HEART NO MATTER WHAT THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE SAYS!
Our seniors meet once a month, on the second Friday, for a potluck lunch, maybe some fun and games ... and a time of prayer and devotion. The time is 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. For our June gathering we are heading into God's great outdoors for a picnic at beautiful Gwynne Vaughn Park. Everyone welcome. Please bring something to share for the potluck lunch, and of course, invite your friends. The park is at the corner of Hope River Rd and Williams St. The parking lot entrance is on Williams St. We are not checking ID at the door, so everyone is welcome to join in this time of fellowship with those who have experienced life with all its ups and down. For more information, contact the church office at [email protected]
Our teachings can be summed up in the words of the Apostle's Creed
I BELIEVE IN GOD, THE FATHER ALMIGHTY , maker of heaven and earth.
AND IN JESUS CHRIST , His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT , the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. AMEN.
What Lutherans Believe
These statements are excerpts from the excellent Lutheran Hour Ministries brochure "What Lutherans Believe" © 2005 They sum up the core teachings of our church body. Read the full document here.
